In this week’s ‘Friends of the Corporate Cup,’ we meet Mohit Kalra.
Mohit loves the Corporate Cup, and he talks to us on his involvement after major heart surgery this year. Mohit is always smiling, so say G’day to him next time you see him, or any other Corporate Cuppers. Keep the walking up Mohit – we will see you all this week!
What attracted you to your first involvement with the Corporate Cup?
10000steps.org.au organised a challenge for 1 billion steps last year collectively for South Australia. I loved the idea, as they mentioned it would be almost like going to the moon and coming back. That was good, but for that you were walking alone, and I got to know about Corporate Cup only last year and I loved the idea of walking or running with your colleagues and having an extra thing to talk about in the office. We had a group chat last year in the office, and we used to chat about how we felt the day when the rounds were scheduled and what worked out well, etc.
What are the best things about the event?
It’s an annual event, and this year I was looking forward to participating as this is a great team activity. It helps you keep fit and it motivates me to do better with each round. The points that we earn after each round are also motivating. It’s a great encouragement to have a nature walk around the river. I love the t-shirts, you can spot so many people around the City, in the bus, in the tram, etc. gives a festive feeling.
You had major heart surgery in April this year for a pre-existing heart condition, why is it important to continue to be active (under your Cardiologist’s watch)?
After my major heart surgery, my cardiologist mentioned that I need to feel better and active, and the only way out for my faster recovery is taking it easy but ensuring that I’m active everyday based on what my body allows. Initially soon after my surgery, I thought I might not be able to participate in the Corporate Cup this year, but I continued to walk every day and increased the distance from a few meters, to a few kilometres, and that’s when I thought I will participate this year, but only for 2.2kms. So, I’m going to enjoy my walk, and potentially leading up to running a little after a few rounds. I’m sure this will have a good and positive impact on my overall well-being.
Why do you love getting out and active with your work colleagues?
I love the idea of working out with someone, which gives me motivation and encouragement. Seeing so many people out there for the Corp Cup run/walk, it is going to do exactly what I need. Also, it’s good to connect with some people, even if that means to say G’day, or saying to someone, enjoy your run, I love doing that.
